The best way to indulge in the Caribbean culture is to try (and prepare!) the local cuisine during a hands-on cooking class on Curaçao. The depth and breadth of Caribbean flavors are endless and Helmi is putting them on the map in a new light. To give you a first-hand experience Helmi hosts Caribbean cooking classes in her kitchen to teach and showcase the flavors and techniques of Caribbean cooking.
Helmi leads a culinary revolution by breaking down and applying new techniques to centuries-old recipes. Combined with her fierce belief in the quality of fresh and locally grown produce, the Caribbean kitchen is evolving from comfort to culinary, from traditional to modern.
What’s the deal?
During the hands-on cooking class on Curaçao, you learn about the flavors and techniques of Caribbean cooking. You get to see, taste and cook with the colorful ingredients such as lionfish, papaya and sweet potato. While this class is aimed to teach tourists more about the local Curaçao cuisine, it is also a great way for locals to learn new ways to use otherwise well-known ingredients.
The cooking class starts with coffee, a tasting of various local ingredients and tips & tricks from the chef. Under Helmi’s supervision, a menu consisting of both traditional as well as modern Caribbean dishes is prepared. And that’s where you come in. Participants will chop, mix, prep, apply cooking techniques and work together to create a delicious lunch. The class ends with the fruits of your own labor on the sunny porch and a well-deserved glass of wine.
