The depth and breadth of Caribbean flavors are endless and Caribbean Chef Helmi Smeulders is putting them on the map in a new light. One of the best culinary experiences on Curaçao is “Dinner in the Field” which takes place only once a month. Every month Helmi visits a different plantation to create more awareness for the island’s local farmers and their beautiful fresh produce. During this farm-to-table concept, you enjoy dinner under de stars amidst the same fresh crops that are also used in the 4-course family-style dinner that is served.
Helmi Smeulders, a lawyer by trade and a chef by choice, is re-inventing the unique flavors of the Caribbean. Her style, creativity, imagination and continuous innovation have brought to life the modern Caribbean cuisine. Helmi leads a culinary revolution by breaking down and applying new techniques to centuries-old recipes. Combined with her fierce belief in the quality of fresh and locally grown produce, the Caribbean kitchen is evolving from comfort to culinary, from traditional to modern.
What’s the deal?
During the Dinner in the Field experience, tables and chairs are set up in the field while Helmi cooks with whatever is available from the land. After a welcome drink and a plantation tour, you’ll enjoy a 4-course family-style dinner and matching wines.
